Does My Body Armour Need To Be CE-Marked?
‘Does my body armour need to be CE-Marked?’ is a question that we hear time and time again from employers seeking body armour for their staff. The issue can be a little foggy, so we thought that we’d clear it up.
What Does CE-Marked Mean?
‘CE’ is an abbreviation of the French phrase ‘Conformité Européene’, meaning ‘European Conformity’. If body armour is adorned with this mark it means that whilst making it its manufacturer complied with the essential requirements of the relevant European health, safety and environmental protection standards. Simply put, the CE-Mark gives you piece of mind that your staff are safe.
By Law, Who Needs the CE-Mark?
We recommend that everyone who wears body armour wears that which is CE-Marked. In the eyes of the law, however, Police and Military wearers do not technically require CE-Marked body armour. Body armour for civilian use, though, must be adorned with the CE-Mark: it falls under the European Council Directive 89/686/EEC on Personal Protective Equipment (PPE). So a hard and fast rule is that if you’re not with the Police or the Military, you need CE-Marked body armour. And a more sensible rule is that everyone who wears body armour needs CE-Marked body armour.
